Mari’s Wine Bar, an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts scene since opening November 2010, will close this week, according to reports.
It’s not clear why the wine bar is closing or exactly when. A phone call was placed to co-owner Anthony Flores seeking comment.
Local poet Lorine Parks announced the news in an e-mail.
Mari’s Wine Bar hosted the Downey Art Coalition’s Art on the Vine gallery exhibit and also a monthly poetry session.
Parks, curator of the Third Thursday Poetry program, said the series will be held at Stay Gallery going forward.
Andrew Wahlquist, founder of the Downey Arts Coalition, called the closure of Mari’s Wine Bar “tragic.”
“The Downey Arts Coalition always enjoyed a healthy, mutually beneficial relationship with Mari’s Wine Bar,” Wahlquist said. “They’ve hosted at least 30 events with us, so this is a tragic loss of a first class venue for art, poetry, music and building community. We wish the best to Mari
and Anthony in their future endeavors.”
