This proposal comes out of left field: a Bellfllower broker has proposed rehabilitating the abandoned south Rancho campus in Downey and using it to house the local homeless population.
Click here to read the L.A. Times story.
Last we heard, L.A. County, which owns the property, planned to redevelop the land and possibly consolidate its county offices there. L.A. County Probation and the L.A. County Office of Education are both headquartered in Downey, with offices on Imperial Highway.
The Times article itself is odd, considering the proposal comes from a single source that is not directly involved in county decision-making.
I think it’s also safe to say that Downey wouldn’t take too kindly to a homeless village within its boundaries.
