A Santa Fe Springs refinery is being blamed for a foul odor that wafted into Downey over the weekend.
According to the AQMD, the bad smell residents are reporting is hydrogen sulfide coming from Ridgeline Energy Services USA.
Although the chemical is not toxic, it may cause headaches, nausea and eye irritation, Santa Fe Springs officials said.
The smell spurred several complaints in Downey over the weekend, particularly from neighborhoods in the eastern part of the city.
In a statement, Downey officials said the city received several complaints of a foul odor and that AQMD is aware of the problem.
Residents can submit odor complaints by calling 1(800) CUT-SMOG or 1(800)288-7664, or logging on to www3.aqmd.gov/webappl/complaintsystemonline/NewComplaint.aspx
