Warren and Downey high schools both had reasons to celebrate yesterday, with each school winning their own CIF championship.
The Bears boys soccer team defeated Loara, 3-1, to win the CIF Southern Section Div. II championship.
Downey’s girls soccer team beat Quartz Hills, also 3-1, to win the Div. IX title. For Downey, it was their second consecutive CIF championship.
Warren’s improbable CIF title came despite a poor start to the season, when the Bears started 1-12. They recovered enough to make the playoffs.
Brian Montano and Nathan Castillo scored to put Warren ahead of Loara, 2-0. A goal by Ramiro Santana in the 52nd minute sealed the win.
“This feels amazing,” Castillo told the Press-Telegram. “We almost quit at the end of the season. We didn’t think we were even going to make CIF. Now we are the champs. This feels amazing.”
Downey and Quartz Hill were scoreless for much of the game until Elizabeth Hamm found the back of the net in the 51st minute, putting the Vikings ahead, 1-0.
Tara Kazimi added her own at the 57th minute.
Quartz Hill made it 2-1 in the 71st minute but a goal by Downey’s Liliana Frasca secured the victory.
Downey finished their season with 22 wins and only three losses and two ties.
