Wednesday morning report, March 23

Five things to know this Wednesday morning:

1.) The City Council voted 3-2 last night to authorize a November ballot measure to increase the local sales tax by half a percent. Mayor Alex Saab and Councilman Sean Ashton were opposed.

Polling indicated that a majority of residents would favor a tax increase, city officials said. Voters will have the final word on the matter in November.

Staff writer Christian Brown is working on a story.

2.) Hector Beltran posted a cool video about an elderly man who is planting flowers to beautify his neighborhood.

"I noticed there were lots of beautiful flowers planted in a part of town that is somewhat forgotten due to a huge lot that has been vacant for many years now.

"I sought out and was lucky enough to find the nice elderly gentleman that has been giving the area some much-needed love and thanked him for helping #makeDowneyBeautiful"

3.) Warren High's Ron Flores has committed to play football at the University of Mount Union in Ohio.

4.) The public is asked to vote in Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard's student art competition.

The People's Choice award winner receives a $250 scholarship and a $125 gift card for art supplies. You can view the entries and vote on Facebook.

5.) Downey native Evan Longoria was one of the baseball players that traveled to Cuba this week.

Longoria, a member of the Tampa Bay Rays, tweeted about the trip. The team arrived back in the states early this morning.
