Thursday morning report, Oct. 8

Five things to know this Thursday morning:

1.) USA National Team soccer star Cobi Jones and Mexican National Team player Oswaldo Sanchez will be at the AT&T store in Downey today from 4-6 p.m., signing autographs and visiting with fans.

The store is at 8240 Firestone Blvd., near Hometown Buffet.

2.) The Downey City Library's book club will discuss "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" by Rachel Joyce today at noon.

The Washington Post named "The Unlikely Pilgrimage" one of its best books of 2013. The meeting is open to all and held in the Cormack Room.

3.) DowneyDailyPhotos has been running their "Humans of Downey" series for a while now, but this one, on a young mother and her two small kids, is probably my favorite.

4.) Warren High's girls volleyball hosts Downey tonight at 6:30 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to wear pink for "Bear Down to Cancer."

5.) The city of Downey is hosting an excursion to see "The Lion King" at the Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa on Oct. 25.

Tickets are $75 for residents and $79 for non-residents. The bus will stop at South Coast Plaza prior to the 6:30 p.m. performance time.

Register at the Barbara Riley Center or call Carole Kirk at (562) 904-7223.
