Friday Morning Report, May 1

Five things to know this Friday morning: 

1.) A celebration of life for former mayor Bob Winningham will be held Tuesday, May 5, at 3 p.m. at the Rio Hondo Event Center. It is open to the public.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Optimist Club of Downey.

2.) An interesting story on the friendship between the cities of Downey and Taughmaconnell, Ireland. Westmeath Independent

3.) Funeral services have been announced for Isaac Okebiorun, the former Downey resident who died unexpectedly earlier this month at age 22.

A viewing will be held May 8 at Simpson’s Family Mortuary in Long Beach from 2-8 p.m.. The funeral service is May 9 at noon, also at Simpson’s Family Mortuary, with interment at 2 p.m. at Roosevelt Memorial Park.

4.) Downey Adult School is now offering DMV driving test preparation classes Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Cost is $69.

There is no behind-the-wheel driving instruction. Students will gain knowledge and familiarity with the DMV written test, traffic signs, traffic laws, and understanding verbal instructions that are given during the driving exam.

5.) The Friends Bookstore located inside the library is currently having a sale on a collection of WWII books.

Next month marks the 70th anniversary of Germany’s surrender, ending the war.
