Monday morning report, Aug. 10

Five things to know this Monday morning:

1.) This cool photo comes courtesy of the Downey Fire Department's Facebook page, and shows Engine 61 crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on its way home from the Humboldt County fire.

"After a week of wildland firefighting in Northern California's Humbolt County, Downey Engine 61 and Strike Team XLG-1261-A have been demobilized today and are returning home," the department posted yesterday. "Check out this photo of Engine 61 crossing the Golden Gate bridge this afternoon! Great work by our firefighters!"

2.) Speaking of the fire department, firefighter/engineer Renick Sampson hand-built a dinner table for Fire Station No. 1. It's impressive

"The fire station dinner table is a place where family comes together everyday and builds comradery. This table incorporates respect for tradition and also shows the sense of pride in unit and department Downey's firefighters have."

3.) It's that time of year again: time to contact Trader Joe's and show them some Downey love.

4.) Indio, a 1-year-old male Shih Tzu mix, is SEAACA's Pet of the Week.

Indio (ID No. 16-03353) can be visited during regular animal viewing hours,  Tuesday - Friday 11:00 am – 6:00 pm Saturdays, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

5.) A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help cover funeral expenses of Mitchell Duran, the 20-year-old Downey resident who was struck and killed early Friday morning while riding his skateboard on Firestone Boulevard.

Nearly $1,700 has been raised as of this morning.
