Monday morning report, July 6

Five things to know this Monday morning:

1.) No major structure fires were reported July 4 (that I'm aware of) though several trees and bushes burned.

I have a request in with the Downey Police Department to see fireworks-related citations were issued this weekend.

2.) El Sushi Loco opened last week to positive reviews. Mayor Pro Tem Alex Saab called the food "amazing."

"Sushi with a Mexican food twist to it; lots of sauces, some carne asada in some of the rolls and more," Saab said. "We are excited they decided to invest in Downey and welcome them to our City."

3.) Downey native Lash Stevenson is gauging interest in a Downey High School class of 1957 reunion. He writes:

"Our last reunion was very successful. The Fabulous Committee (Anne, Carolyn, and Kay) have been together for many years and have retired. Since I have had some experience putting on reunions, I will try to continue the tradition.

"I will need some help. To start with, we need communication between classmates. Right now all that I am asking for is your response to this letter. First please give me an indication if you would:

Definitely attend our next reunion  (60th)
Probably attend
Definitely not attend

"Since I have a limited number of classmate e-mail addresses, some of our classmates will be left out of this communication. Would you please share this with your class of '57 friends.

"Let's keep this very special class of 1957 tradition alive into the future. Help me spread the word. This will be the last notice of 2015."

Contact Lash Stevenson at (650) 345-5274 or write him at 1626 Palm Ave., San Mateo, CA 94402

4.) The Downey Rose Float Association is hosting a comedy night fundraiser July 19 at Steven's Steakhouse in Commerce.

Three comedians are scheduled to perform. Tickets are $50 pre-sale or $60 at the door, and include a chicken marinara and beef bourguignon dinner, with beef kabobs to start.

Buy tickets by calling Sue England at (562) 889-1828 or Jennifer DeKay at (562) 714-5658.

5.) The city of Downey and Chamber of Commerce are hosting a 6-week small business seminar series that covers how to start a small business, marketing strategies, lease negotiations, and more.
