1.) Congratulations to Christian Brown, Carol Kearns and Ricardo Perez for their nominations in the L.A. Press Club SoCal Journalism awards program, held last night at the Biltmore Hotel. 

Brown won second place in the online Lifestyle Features category for his work with Neon Tommy, while Kearns won third place for her feature story on Downey's Ferraro family.

2.) The Downey Police Department's two canines, Dani and Dash, have received bullet- and stab-protective vests courtesy of local donations

The vests were donated  by Vested Interest in K9s Inc., the Downey Dog Obedience Group, and the Hausman Family Foundation. 

Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interested has provided protective vests to 1,460 law enforcement dogs around the country. 

3.) St. Pius X - St. Matthias Academy announced that 100 percent of its 2015 graduating class are going on to higher education. 

4.) Christie Melby-Gibbons, formerly of the Moravian Church of Downey, is in Milwaukee and already doing big things

5.) Calvary Chapel of Downey is not hosting a July 4 fireworks show this year, meaning Downey residents will have to leave the city for a professional show.
