Tuesday morning report, Sept. 29

Five things to know this Tuesday morning:

1.) The 5 Freeway will be fully closed between Paramount Boulevard and Slauson Avenue tonight. The closure begins at midnight and extends to 5 a.m.

Caltrans also plans a partial closure Wednesday night.

Caltrans officials say the closures are necessary to replace bearing pads and reset rocker bearings that were damaged in a fire under the Rio Hondo River bridge this past July.

2.) Downey's third annual Walk to School Day returns Wednesday, Oct. 7. On that day, students are encouraged to walk to school (and drivers are asked to slow down).

"Our goal is to promote exercise and traffic safety while encouraging students and parents to walk to school," city officials said. The event is sponsored locally by the city of Downey and Downey Unified School District.

3.) The Huffington Post takes down a piece of legislation sponsored by state Sen. Tony Mendoza.

4.) The family of James Lieneke, the 19-year-old man shot and killed in Downey last April, is asking for help to solve his killing.

5.) Clothes the Deal is Assemblymember Cristina Garcia's latest #Pride58 award recipient.

Based in Downey, Clothes the Deal provides business apparel to low-income job seekers.
