Thursday morning report, Aug. 13

Five things to know this Thursday morning: 

1.) The AARP will host a "sip, sample and serve" event at Stay Gallery tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. 

Learn about the AARP, and volunteer opportunities. The event is free but registration is required online or by calling (877) 926-8300.


2.) Prestige Barbershop is opening Aug. 30 in the space previously occupied by Videomax at the corner of Imperial Highway and Lakewood Boulevard. 

The shop, which specializes in kids haircuts, will be offering free food and haircuts from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 


3.) The 50th anniversary of St. Matthias High School and 60th jubilee of Pius X High School will be celebrated Oct. 24. 

The event will be held on the St. Pius X - St. Matthias Academy campus and includes an alumni hall of fame ceremony, Mass, tours of the school, dinner, Mass and live band.

4.) Jasmin Gallegos, a 2008 Warren High grad, has completed basic training with the Air Force National Guard. 

Her mom is Macrina Rivera, of Downey. Jasmin also has a bachelor's degree from Cal State Northridge. 


5.) Downey residents are being asked to be alert for a citrus tree threat. 

Huanglongbing, also known as HLB, is the Asian Citrus Psyllid pest that carries the disease. While harmless to people and adults, the disease has no known cure and is fatal to trees.
