Thursday morning report, June 4

Five things to know this Thursday morning: 

1.) A massive cocaine bust at a Santa Fe Springs home yesterday resulted in the seizure of 561 pounds of cocaine. 

The drugs, combined with a related seizure of 120 pounds of cocaine in San Bernardino, have a combined street value of $35 million, authorities said. SB Sun

 

2.) Downey native and MMA veteran Dan Henderson will fight this Saturday on a UFC card. 

Henderson, 44, faces relatively unknown Tim Boetsch in a 5-round middleweight match-up. The card airs live on Fox Sports 1. 

 

3.) Downey resident Rick Huff, will speak at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center's Festival of Life this Saturday, June 6 at the USC Health Sciences Campus. 

Huff will join hundreds of other cancer survivors celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day at this annual event. It's a festive day filled with music and reunions of patients with the physicians, nurses and staff who helped them as they progressed through cancer treatment. 

4.) Even while on vacation, Councilman Fernando Vasquez is not far from Downey. 

Vasquez and his wife, Donna Noushkam Vasquez, hold a copy of the "new" Downey Patriot on a recent trip to El Cielo vineyard located in Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California Mexico, which is next to Downey's sister city Ensenada, Baja California.

 

5.) Seventy locations throughout Southern California are offering free hands-only CPR training today. 

Downey firefighters will offer training at Stonewood Center from 10 a.m. to noon, and Liberty Ambulance officials will be at Downey Landing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
