Thursday morning report, Sept. 10

Five things to know this Thursday morning: 

1.) Police officers, firefighters, EMTs and military personnel are invited to Maude Price Elementary tomorrow, Sept. 11, at 8:15 a.m. to mark Patriot Day. 

The entire school will gather on the blacktop for a short assembly, which will including reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. All first responders are invited. 


2.) Keller Williams Realty will hold a ribbon-cutting today for its new offices at 8255 Firestone Blvd., next to Porto's Bakery. The event is from 5-8 p.m. 


3.) Comedian Vic Diaz is searching for a Downey business that would like to host a comedy show. 

"I'm trying to make stand up comedy more accessible in the area, and I'd like to host more shows like [the one last week]," he said. If you have a venue, you can contact him here


4.) "Walmart coming to The Promenade at Downey is the absolute worst thing to happen to the City of Downey and its residents since the closure of the Downey NASA Industrial Site (Rockwell) in 1999. 

"Yes, the absolute worst thing." 


5.) Downey firefighters plan to hold their "Fill the Boot" fundraiser benefiting the Musculuar Dystrophy Association on Sept. 26. They'll be at the intersection of Lakewood and Firestone boulevards.
