Thursday morning report, Sept. 24

Five things to know this Thursday morning:

1.) Services for Joshua Figueroa, the Downey High student who died last week, will take place this weekend.

A viewing is scheduled for Friday from 6-8:30 p.m. at Praise Chapel Paramount. Services are Saturday and begin at 10 a.m. at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach.

Joshua took his own life at his Bellflower home. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help offset funeral costs.

2.) Staff writer Christian Brown reports that Mayor Luis Marquez was fined $200 for failing to pay a required $50 fee to the secretary of state in 2013.

From Brown's story, which will be posted online later today:

"Marquez acknowledged on Wednesday that the $50 fee was overlooked by his campaign, but maintained that no legal violation took place.

"It was an oversight by the campaign, but we'll take care of it," Marquez said. "That committee is closing soon anyway, but we always like to be in compliance with the FPPC."

3.) Light and Life Church celebrated its 50th anniversary over the weekend. Here are pictures from the celebration.

4.) And here are pictures from the Desert Reign Church ribbon-cutting. The church has existed for several years but just recently joined the chamber.

5.) Councilman Sean Ashton will host a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. tonight at the Barbara J. Riley Center. Bring your questions.
