Tuesday (late) morning report, June 2

Five things to  know this Tuesday morning:

1.) Apologies for the late post this morning; had a Gangs Out of Downey meeting that started at 7:30 a.m.

Speaking of Gangs Out of Downey, Rick Rodriguez was sworn-in as president of GOOD today. GOOD also approved its 2015-16 operating budget, which includes funding for police officers on high school campuses; a gang-deterrent program at Brookshire Park; youth intervention and community awareness programs; and more.

Rodriguez's officers include Mark McDaniel (1st VP); Alex Saab (2nd VP); Ray Mesler (treasurer); and Julie Garcia (secretary).

2.) The Downey Rose Float Association is hosting a fundraiser at Pina's Pizza all day today.

When purchasing food, mention the Rose Float and a percentage of the sale will be donated to Downey's 2016 float, "Exploring the Everglades."

3.) Caltrans is paying for a school shuttle over the Florence Avenue bridge at the 5 Freeway.

According to the Whittier Daily News, "The bus service isn’t expected to be needed until spring of 2016 when construction on the bridge is expected to begin. That work is expected to take place between April 2016 and September 2017."

4.) Dale Myers, a retired NASA engineer who at one time worked at North American Aviation on the Apollo program, died May 19. Read his obituary here

5.) Seniors at St. Pius X - St. Matthias Academy have graduated. The school posted a photo gallery on its Facebook page
