Tuesday morning report, Aug. 4

Five things to know this Tuesday morning:

1.) Downey will celebrate National Night Out with activities in the Civic Center from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

The family event includes free barbecue, face painting, vendor booths, demonstrations, bicycle and skateboarding workshops, free child ID fingerprinting, and more. Below is the full schedule:

6 p.m. Opening Remarks
7 p.m. Downey PD K-9 demonstration
7:45 p.m. Downey Fire demonstration
8:15 p.m. Closing Remarks


2.) Gangs Out of Downey meets at 7:30 a.m. in the second floor training room at City Hall.


3.) Friday is the deadline for teens to apply to serve on the Downey Youth Commission. Click here for an application.


4.) The Downey Lions Club is accepting donations -- monetary and material -- as it prepares to provide 20-30 students with back-to-school shopping sprees.

The service club also hopes to provide 50-100 backpacks to local kids, each of the backpacks filled with school supplies.

In addition to cash donations, the club is in need of pens, pencils, paper, crayons, glue sticks, calculators, and other school supplies. To help, contact the Lions Club.
