Tuesday morning report, Feb. 9

Five things to know this Tuesday morning:

1.) Pile driving work started yesterday on the 5 Freeway at Florence Avenue, part of the massive freeway renovation currently underway.

Work will be performed weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and will take about 4-6 weeks to complete. Residents in the area can expect increased levels of noise and vibrations.

2.) The City Council tonight will consider extending its franchise agreement with CalMet Services an additional 10 years.

Under terms of the deal, CalMet would freeze residential rate increases for one year, replace its gasoline trucks with CNG vehicles, and replace 63,000 trash bins and carts. CalMet would also begin offering a 10% discount to senior citizens.

3.) Council members are moving ahead with a civic center park project, and tonight will consider authorizing Phase 1 of the renovation.

4.) Downey is now offering paperless water billing.

5.) The strip mall at 7355 Florence Ave. (anchored by a 7-Eleven) is for sale. Asking price: $5.4 million.
