Tuesday morning report, Nov. 3

Five things to know this Tuesday morning:

1.) It's Election Day, and Downey voters will fill three open seats on the Downey school board. Here are the candidates:

Area 3
Willie Gutierrez
Claudia Medina

Area 4
Maria Avalos
Donald LaPlante
Linda Saldana

Area 6
D. Mark Morris
Vanessa Rodriguez

Tod Corrin automatically received a four-year term after nobody filed to run against him. Polls close at 8 p.m.

2.) Bastards is hosting a Veterans Day party Nov. 10, complete with live music, barbecue buffet, beer garden, vendor booths, and a historical cake-cutting ceremony to mark the Marines' 240th birthday.

Proceeds will benefit Save the Brave

3.) Su Casa, a local shelter for victims of domestic violence, is seeking adopters for their families this Christmas season.

"All of these families made the courageous step to break the cycle of violence and are in need of some much-needed cheer and support," the organization says.

To adopt a family, contact Christina Kreachbaum at (562) 505-9479 or christina@sucasadv.org.

4.) An anonymous Downey resident emailed the Downey Patriot to warn of a possible predator targeting pets:

"Yesterday morning my neighbor was in a panic because there was a mutilated cat on her front lawn. The cat was cut perfectly in half with no blood and its intestines neatly pulled of of its body. At first we thought it was a coyote, but that didn't make sense because the cat was cut so perfectly in half and there was no blood.

"No, someone who is very sick has to have done this, but why? I've been researching online and apparently this does happen all over the U.S., but no one knows who or why. The scariest part is that once one cat is found, others are sure to follow.

"I want the city of Downey to be on the look out for this sick person or persons who are killing our animals. Also, there must be some reason for the killings and NOT just because of Halloween. Cat killings like this happen throughout the year and someone has to very really demented to be able to literally cut a cat in half. Be careful with your pets, please lock them up at night."

5.) In case you missed the announcement on the Patriot's Facebook page, four Promenade tenants have confirmed their opening dates:

Lazy Dog will be the first to open Dec. 2, followed by 24 Hour Fitness (Dec. 5), Cinemark (Dec. 9) and Floor & Decor (Dec. 17).
