Wednesday morning report, Aug. 17

Five things to know this Wednesday morning: 

1.) It's the first day of school for Downey Unified, so for the love of God slow down and obey the traffic laws. 


2.) The Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. tonight and will consider a hookah lounge's request to host live entertainment. 

Hookah Hub, located on Firestone Boulevard just east of Downey Avenue, wants to hold nightly live entertainment, specifically DJs and live bands.

City officials are in favor, saying the nightlife will draw more people downtown.


3.) Former Downey educator Craig Bertsch died Saturday. Not many details were released surrounding his death. 

Bertsch was a longtime teacher and vice principal at Downey Unified. He left to become director of administrative services for the Fullerton school district in 2011, and last year was promoted to assistant superintendent of personnel services. 

He graduated from Downey High School.


4.) The new Green Olive restaurant opens at the Promenade today. 


5.) Warren High's band and color guard is trying to raise $7,000 for an overnight trip to Santa Clarita. and they're just about there.
