Wednesday morning report, July 27

Five things to know this Wednesday morning:

1.) Everything on yesterday's City Council agenda passed unanimously last night. If you're interested, you can read my running commentary on Facebook.

2.) Emergency services manager Andrew Stevens is the guest speaker at a Downey Chamber of Commerce City Affairs meeting at noon today.

The meeting takes place at Farmers and Merchant Bank and is open to the public.

3.) The Downey Symphony performs tonight at Furman Park. Bring the kids and they'll be allowed to lead the orchestra.

4.) City Council district 3 candidate Louis Morales will hold his campaign kick-off at 5 p.m. tonight at Club DB Lounge.

Morales promises a "special guest."

5.) The Columbia Memorial Space Center and a Downey girl are featured in this new television commercial from the SoCal Honda Dealers.

Mayor Alex Saab provides the backstory:

"Over a month ago, Honda contacted the City of Downey's Columbia Memorial Space Center asking for the names of children who might might be interested in going to Space Camp. Honda explained that this was going to be a surprise, part of the Honda advertising initiative, where wishes are granted. After interviewing several of the girls in the Columbia Memorial Space Center STEM Club, one of our very own, Marissa, was chosen as the recipient of the surprise trip to space camp.

"Marissa, as are all of our girls in the Columbia Memorial Space Center STEM Club girls, is a gem and a true fan of the Columbia Memorial Space Center. She represents the kind of Center guest that we have been working hard to grow, with a family behind her who is involved and participates in furthering our mission.

Good luck Marissa and congratulations!"
