Detectives have made an arrest in yesterday's dragging death on Lakewood Boulevard, Sgt. Alex Irizibal of the Downey Police Department said today.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was charged with murder and is currently being held in L.A. County Jail.
According to Irizibal, Downey police were dispatched yesterday at approximately 12:30 a.m. to a fight in progress on the 9000 block of Imperial Highway.
Four or five people were fighting with a single person, Irizibal said.
Police found the victim, identified only as a 35-year-old Hispanic man from Buena Park, lying face down in the northbound traffic lanes of Lakewood Boulevard near Rose Avenue suffering from multiple wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Based on evidence and witness statements, police believe the victim was run over and dragged for several hundred yards beneath the suspect's vehicle.
Police said it was unknown whether the victim was involved in the original fight.
The Downey Police Department is investigating the death with the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Detective Paul Hernandez at (562) 904-2368 or Detective Steve Aubuchon at (562) 904-2361.
