NORWALK -- The Cerritos College Foundation awarded three automotive scholarships to six promising students during its Board meeting on Nov. 19.

The Jeannie M.T. Yang Scholarship, a $500 award, was presented to Hector Arellano-Garcia, Jr. of North Hollywood and Luis Bautista of Hawaiian Gardens. Established in memory of Dr. Jeannie M.T. Yang, a community college professor.

Arellano-Garcia knows exactly what he wants to accomplish and is determined to work toward his goals. He plans to obtain an associate degree in automotive technology and transfer to Northwood University to purse a bachelor’s in automotive marketing and management.

For Bautista, who recently discovered his fondness for cars, the first automotive class he is taking this semester has been an amazing introduction to the field.

Another Automotive scholarship, the SMCDA Automotive Technology Scholarship, was presented to Alexis Rumbo of South Gate, Juan Arreola of North Hollywood, and Danny Quazada of Paramount.

Rumbo originally enrolled at Cerritos College as a computer science major. One automotive class he took when he had car troubles changed it all.

For Arreola, cars have always been his passion as long as he can remember. He plans to complete his automotive degree at the college and transfer to Northwood University and earn a bachelor’s in automotive management.

Quezada used to watch his father work on the cars and help him as a child. He would fix any cars, be it his friends’ or his family’s, to get more experience. He plans on transferring to a four-year university and become a master technician.
