DOWNEY – The results of Week 5 against the Gardena Mohicans pretty much mirrored those of Week 2 when the Downey Razorbacks met Gardena back on Sept. 19.
MiteMite Razorbacks (7, 8 and 9 year olds), now with a record of 1 win and 4 losses on the season, lost to the Mohicans 24-6. The Hogs were unable to avenge their last-play loss to Gardena in Week 2.
Junior PeeWee Razorbacks (8-10) regained their offensive potency by outclassing the Mohicans, 31-0. The Junior PeeWee record now stands at 3 wins and 2 losses, and puts them back in the chase for a conference playoff berth.
PeeWee Razorbacks (9-11) lost their first encounter with the Mohicans, 6-0, back in September in an extremely close game, decided in the last minute. This time, Gardena was more prepared and skunked the Hogs, 28-2.
The Junior Midget Razorbacks (10-12) began the game with a 75-yard return of the initial kickoff. It was the first kickoff return for the unbeaten (5-0) Hogs this year.
Joshua Medina fielded the kick and, with excellent blocking from his teammates, scampered the distance. The Hog defense once again played a strong game, limiting Gardena gains and forcing turnovers. After the Hog reserves’ drive bogged down, Justin Huff and the first string team blasted for a 5-yard score and added a 1-point run for the PAT.
On the ensuing kickoff, Joshua Palacios hustled down the field tackling the Mohican runner and nearly recovering the ball. When the Hogs returned to offense, Jelani Dozier-Jones dashed for a 25-yard touchdown score. His run for the PAT put the score at 20-0.
Rafael Rodriguez made the most dazzling play of the game on a triple option keeper, scoring from the 25-yard line. Defense reared its head once again when Justin Huff intercepted a pass and took it to the house only to have the play called back on an illegal hit penalty. Josh Medina’s 5-yard run capped the scoring the Hogs at 33-0.
The Midget Hogs have a young, inexperienced team this season. Most of these players will be representing our local high schools next year and are getting valuable playing experience. The Midget Hogs play good defense and have an exciting offense, but that inexperience has resulted in several close looses this team. Against Gardena, the 1-4 Hogs came up short, 26-20.
Tomorrow, most Razorback teams will host TriCities (San Pedro and Harbor City) at St. Matthias High School in Downey. The MityMite game begins at 9 a.m., with games following every two hours.
The Midget Hogs will play at Warren High School at 5 p.m.
