Desalination plants

Dear Editor:Gov. Jerry Brown stated that we can't manufacture water. But state Republican leader Bob Huff said that we can manufacture water by desalinating ocean water. A Connecticut-based developer, Poseidon Resources, will be building a desalination plant in San Diego for $900 million and will produce 50 million gallons of water a day. Carlsbad, Dana Point, Huntington Beach, Long Beach and Redondo Beach would like to do the same as San Diego, but state and regional water boards and the state coastal commission are slowing this all down. Catalina Island has been making 1 million gallons a day for a few years now. Santa Barbara voted for a desalination plant. In Australia, every large city has a desalination plant, or is building one. California should follow suit. It would be so nice for us not to worry about how much rain we get in California. Mike Sandoval Downey
