City offers supplemental paramedic insurance

DOWNEY - The open enrollment period has arrived for Downey residents interested in enrolling in the city's Emergency Medical Transport program, which helps offset the costs related to paramedic services. The program costs $48 annually and covers out-of-pocket expenses associated with emergency medical transportation. Without the supplemental coverage, the cost of each paramedic transport starts at $1,413, officials with the Downey Fire Department said. Basic life support transportation fees start at $888. The $48 annual fee covers all permanent household residents. Officials said the $48 fee helps the city offset the costs of providing two fire department paramedic squads and a basic life support ambulance. Residents will receive the same level of service regardless of whether or not they purchase the supplemental insurance. Residents in single-family homes may have noticed an additional $48 fee added to their water and trash bill. To enroll in program, include that amount in your next water and trash payment. Residents who do not receive water and trash bills can sign-up by seeing the cashier window at City Hall or calling (562) 904-7254. The program is open to all residents of single-family homes, apartments and condos.
