Last chance for garden party tickets

DOWNEY - Time is slipping by, but you can still make your reservations for the Downey Symphony's wonderful Garden Party, scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Sept. 22, from 4-7 p.m., at the Rio Hondo Event Center. This event raises funds for the orchestra's Music in the Schools program, to benefit all the city's elementary school children. Do I have to be a supporting member of the symphony to get invited? No. Do I have to know the difference between a symphony and a tuba? No. Do I have to like classical music? No. Do I have to like kids? It helps. Do I have to want quality music education for Downey's kids? Yes. OK, so if you passed this pop quiz with a grade of C or better, you are good to go. Be prepared for entertainment from a very cool, very live sax quartet. Come hungry: hors d'oeuvres and dinner will be ample and delicious with spirits flowing. Fun drawings for good stuff. Some live auction deals you may not be able to resist. Relaxing views across the golf course. Children welcomed. You'll find friends at the party whom you already know, or you will make friends on the spot, including our totally splendid orchestra director, Sharon Lavery, who wants to meet everybody. Sharon will also give us an inside look at how that crazy miracle, an orchestra concert, comes together. Reservations at $75 per person should be received by next Tuesday, Sept. 17, so call (562) 861-4845 for more information or to reserve your place. And don't be surprised if you return home knowing stuff about a symphony and a tuba. That's a freebie.
