Local resident with MS to ride 100 miles

SANTA FE SPRINGS - Two days after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), Santa Fe Springs resident Matthew Bullard formed a team for Bike MS to take control and fight back against this unpredictable disease that attacks the body's central nervous system.Bullard, who is general manager of Southern California Valve, recruited family, friends and co-workers for Team SCV, and together they raised more than $6,000 for better treatments and a cure. This year, Team SCV has grown to 25 team members and is set to ride 100 miles in the Bike MS: Coastal Challenge taking place Oct. 12-13, hosted by the local chapter of the National MS Society. "Since my diagnosis, I have been symptom free and I am grateful for that," Bullard said. "Despite having MS, I live a healthy and active life." Team SCV is hosting a spaghetti lunch fundraiser Friday, Sept. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Southern California Valve, located at 13903 Maryton Ave. in Santa Fe Springs to raise money for the cause. The goal of Bike MS: Coastal Challenge is to raise $1 million. Funds raised will support direct services for the more than 19,000 people with MS and their families in Southern California and Nevada, along with worldwide MS research efforts. People can participate in the race individually or as a team. Volunteers are also needed. For details, go online to bikeMSsocal.org or call (310) 479-4456.
