Just a little desk-clearing...

•The proposal submitted by National CORE to redevelop the Avenue Theatre and Verizon building will not be made public because negotiations are still underway, city officials told me.

When the City Council votes to approve the agreement, the proposal will become public record, city officials said.

•Some busy Saturday's coming up. Tomorrow is the annual Carnival of Champions at Warren High School; May 2 is the Street Faire; and May 9 is Kid's Day at Furman Park.

The Downey Patriot will have a booth at the Street Faire, so drop by and say hi. We'll have applications for prospective interns, as well as information on advertising. Kinda boring, I know, but hey, we're a newspaper.

•West Middle School librarian Julia Desalernos, who was recently honored as "Teacher of the Year" by the Los Angeles Clippers, has also been named "Woman of the Year" by Assemblyman Hector De La Torre.

• The MTA voted yesterday to name a stretch of the Gold Line after Edward R. Roybal, late father of Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, who represents Downey in Congress.

•Downey resident Josh Wright is headed to Camp Pendleton to deliver care packages to troops. If you want to contribute, e-mail liljoshwright@yahoo.com

•Gangs Out of Downey took in more than $11,000 at Wednesday's fundraiser luncheon. And that's just in donations and doesn't count revenue from ticket sales.

The council keeps talking about the Downey Theater and how it's going to revitalize downtown. That theater has been there for 38 years so far it hasn't managed to do a thing for downtown. Why would they think it will start now? Also if any council members are reading this has the city done any research on the impacts of traffic for the area and what proof will be provided that condos at this location are a good use of the property?

Here's some nice examples of what could be done with the Avenue Theater site.

i cannot stress enough how wrong it would be for the city council to decide on anything that destroys the avenue theatre to build any form of housing. PERIOD!!! listen, please...this is one of the BIGGEST opportunities for the downey downtown area to revive itself. if you want to keep building GENERIC and non-authentic buildings like every where else in the city, and in EVERY surrounding suburb, then continue business as usual. If you want downey to continue on the road to something special and unique... then DONT SETTLE FOR LESS... anything to do with housing in that building is the worst possible scenario... this is not Pasadena... its not going to turn into some artist community just by building lofts... it doesn't happen that way. You have to bring people into the city because they believe in what the city is about.

there are plenty of other spotsin downtown avenue for housing... dont wreck the only one that has potential to be a HUGE draw for people to actually GO to downtown downey!
