DOWNEY - The five youth football games held at Downey High School Saturday were worthy of the title Pacific League Championships. All but one game was either an overtime game or a one-point decision.
Teams representing half of the 20 Southern California cities who earned the right to represent their community in the PCC’s League Championship games played championship quality football. The winning teams move on to participate in the ultimate prize, the PCC Super Bowl game to be played at Mira Costa High School tomorrow.
Downey’s PeeWee Razorbacks were one of the teams to fall one point short, in a 14-13 loss to the Twin Cities Worverines. In fact, the Hogs were one yard short of a victory, being stopped short of the touchdown at the one-yard line.
Moses Alaniz’s 45-yard run advanced the ball inside the red zone but the offense, which had performed so well in previous weeks, was unable to push the ball in.
The Wolverines scored the initial touchdown of the game and led 8-0, but the Razorbacks immediately answered with a nice drive culminating with a 15-yard run by Justin Huff. The Hogs scored again on a sweep by Joshua Medina and appeared to take charge of the game. However, late in the fourth quarter, Twin Cities was able to fashion a drive for the deciding score.
Their drive was aided by some mental errors by the Razorbacks. The Hog defense repeatedly held the Wolverines to fourth down and short yardage on the drive, only to have a penalty give the visitors a first down, allowing them to eventually score with little time on the clock.
All in all, it was a very successful season for the PeeWee Razorbacks as well as the other five teams in the 2008 season.
