DOWNEY - The second round of the Pacific Coast Conference championship playoff schedule last Saturday was not kind to the local Downey Razorback tackle football teams.

Four Razorback teams, MityMite White, PeeWee, Junior Midget, and Midget, had advanced to the second round, but unfortunately, only one, the PeeWee’s ( 9, 10, 11year olds) will play in the league championship game tomorrow at Downey High School.

The PeeWee Hogs exhibited a stifling defense and a strong offense to beat the Twin Cities Wolverines, 32-0, at Gardena High School. Justin Huff initiated the first of his two touchdown runs with a 15-yard dash to put the Hogs ahead for good early in the first quarter. Excellent blocking from the offensive line Anthony Menendez, Francisco Arrellano, Aaron Castillo, Wendel Kuhn, Angel Luevanos, Joshua Palacios, and Austin Espinosa, enabled the Downey running backs to move the ball effectively.

After Huff second TD, a short 5-yard burst, Joshua Medina scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 70-yard pass interception and point-after try to put Downey ahead 20-0.

After a crushing block by Anthony Menendez on the Wolverine cornerback, Medina’s 45-yard scamper closed out the first half with Downey leading 26-0.

Quarterback Rafael Rodriguez connected on a well-executed pass with Austin Espinosa to keep the next drive going and allow Medina’s next run, a 65-yarder to put the Hogs in the winner’s circle.

Jake Cook closed out the fourth quarter with two fine 30-yard runs which allowed the Hogs to control the ball walk away with the semi-final win.

The PeeWee Razorbacks play in the league championship tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Downey High School.
