DOWNEY - Razorback’s MityMite White football team handled their first round playoff game by routing the Lawndale Cardinal 38-0 last Saturday.
On the second play of the game, Adrian Ochoa scampered for a 40-yard TD to put Downey ahead for good. On the Hogs’ second possession, Mason Marquez tossed a touchdown pass to Justin Linden for another quick score. By the end of the first quarter, the Razorbacks were leading 20-0.
Late in the second half, Jordan Cardenas found Stephen Zepeda for a 50-yard pass/run score, and Rey Castellanos ran for a 40-yard touchdown. MityMite White plays a challenging Lakewood Eagle team tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Mayfair High School.
The PeeWee Hogs reached a season high in their first round victory over the Gardena Mohicans in Buena Park. The Razorbacks scored on their first drive with fullback Francisco Arrellano bullying his way for the score and PAT. Arrellano was supported by the reserve team, known affectionately as “Bacon”, driving the ball on a 40-yard grind-it-out score.
With the Downey defense playing superbly, “Bacon’s” score was all that was needed for the Hogs to win. However, the regulars were not to be outdone. The No. 1 seeded Razorbacks scored again when a Gardena punt was partially blocked into the hands of linebacker Moses Alanis who scampered for 30 yards and a score.
The defense rose to the occasion on the next Gardena possession, with Joshua Medena intercepting a Mohican pass. On the next play, fullback Alanis scored a 40-yard TD on a beautifully executed trap block by left guard Angel Luevanos. Miguel Esquitin intercepted a pass in Gardena’s next possession and Jason Huff followed with a double wing off-tackle run to put the Razorbacks ahead at 27-0.
In the second half, Moses and Angel teamed up again to score on a 70-yard scamper. Later in the quarter, Medina made his second interception and this time he ran it back for a 65-yard TD. Linebacker Rafael Rodriquez recovered a Gardena fumble, then acting as the Hog quarterback, pitched to Huff for a 35-yard score.
In the final quarter, cornerback Jake Cook, not to be outdone, got his interception on a nice defensive play. Justin Huff followed with a 70-yard run but was caught inside the 10 yard line where the Hogs ran out the clock. Tomorrow, the PeeWee’s will play the Lakewood Lions at Gardena High School. Game time is 3 p.m.
In their first round playoff game the Jr. Midget Razorbacks defeated Lawndale Cardinal 36-6. The Downey running attack controlled the tempo all game long, with Tristan Esparza, Gregory Martinez, Darren McCaughan, and Daniel Sanchez sharing duties. The win was another strong performance by the defense lead by the hard hitting of George Zavalla, Jacob Kent, Anthony Alvarado and Justin Perciado.
Interceptions by Tristan Esparza and Darren McCaughan and Justin Marquez’s fumble recovery and 40-yard TD run were key plays that stopped any chance Lawndale had against the Hogs. Gregory Martinez’s return of the second half kickoff thrilled Razorback fans.
Jr. Midget plays the Gardena Mohicans in the second round of the conference playoffs at 5 p.m. at Gardena High School tomorrow.
Razorback Midgets squeaked by Inglewood 8-0 last week to advance to the second round against the first seeded Lakewood Titans. The game will be held at Torrance High School at noon tomorrow.
