DOWNEY – For the first time in 15 years, Downey wrestling successfully defended its championship against Warren, steamrolling the Bears 44-12 and showing why they’re ranked No. 1 in CIF.
In dominating fashion, Downey managed to win all but three matches including the marquee match-up of Damien Gomez versus David Andrade.
Gomez was ranked No. 3 in the state heading into the match and held a 39-0 record this year while Andrade was 21-9.
Quickly, Andrade scored two points to take the lead but Gomez quickly fired back, scoring 5 points before almost getting Andrade to submit. Gomez kept control of the match and was up 8-2 before pinning Andrade in the third period.
That was the last time Warren saw any of the lead as Downey took complete control of the match.
