DOWNEY – As the deadline to qualify as a City Council candidate in November’s election draws closer, potential candidates continue to pull papers, hopeful that wary voters will name them one of the city’s next Council members.

Among these candidates is Alex Saab, a local attorney, who hopes to claim the Council’s District 4 (northeast) seat, which will soon be vacated by Mayor Anne Bayer. In November, Saab will face off against Planning Commissioner Fernando Vasquez and community leader Lee Ann Sears.

For Saab, being elected to the City Council will give him an opportunity to voice his opinions and make a difference in the community where he grew up.

“I’m a product of Downey – I live here, my business is here,” said Saab, who announced his candidacy in March. “I have way too much to lose and the citizens deserve better. My heart is in this and I am fully committed to serving our community.”

Saab believes independent voices must be elected to the City Council in order to avoid a corruption fiasco similar to the one occurring in the city of Bell today.

“We don’t want another Bell situation in our city,” he said. “The City Council members there were in cahoots with each other…none would stand up against each other. It’s an issue and potential concern in Downey – people need to be aware of any candidate hand-chosen by members of the Council.”

Saab said three Council members have expressed support for one of his opponents while the other has been strongly endorsed by the mayor.

“It’s not healthy,” said Saab over the phone. “And if they win will they have the wherewithal to stand against those Council members who helped put them up there?”

If elected, Saab assures residents that he will be fiscally responsible, making public safety and the city budget woes top priorities.

“What distinguishes me from the other candidates is my business experience,” Saab said. “I will use my experience to encourage business in Downey.”

Saab currently sits on the board of directors for the Downey Chamber of Commerce and is a trustee of the Southeast District Bar Association. He also serves on numerous committees of the Downey Board of Realtors.

As the campaign in District 4 heats up, hints of a potential race in District 2 emerged this week as residents Ronald Kellogg and Benjamin Coute took out papers, signaling possible competition for Councilman Mario Guerra who faces reelection this November.

Kellogg, a resident of Downey for nearly 25 years, would not confirm a run against Guerra, but did promise that he would be making a decision soon. Kellogg said taking out papers was just a necessary first step.

Coute, a newcomer to local politics, could not be reached for comment.

All candidates must submit their completed paperwork to the city clerk’s office by Aug. 6.

I firmly believe Saab has a valid point and is looking for the interest of the community. As goes for "downeyborn"'s comment, how can one be so judgmental toward another human being bashing his practices when yet they don't know anything about him other than a business practice. You can't go after ones bias opinion they feel destroys the community, because in reality he helps it grow. Before we try to look at our community, sometimes we need to look at ourselves and see what we are doing to help. As opposed to keeping a community on the same path one feels is proper. In reality if we expect change may be something needs to be different. After all the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Another note, as proud of my country I am. I hate to break it to anyone if they haven't noticed, but this country was built on immigration. All the people down putting someone because they feel he's helping "illegal immigrants" if you are intimidated by race and a strong growth of a multicultural community may be the city that you care so deeply should be of one culture, one race, blond hair and blue eyed, and then we'll be on the right path just like a good role model Hitler. Looking out for the community by illuminating all the other races. Let's all be adults here and not make assumptions of what they think will be best. It's not what you think is best for the community, but what the community can do to make it at its best.

I like how everyone thought it was you Thunderchild. To take a page out of Cartozian's book: Hohoho shows what good reading skills you all have, how'd you get through high school? Huhuhuh.

To Kirk Cartozian:

I am not Thundertrak, I am the much beloved (by Councilman Guerra - LOL) Thunderchild. I think this Thundertrak adopted his/her handle for the sake of confusion. I actually have not commented on this subject --- yet!

However I did write the comment on the McDonald's. I shop at the Ralph's store there and I sometimes buy a Dreg McAwful at the McDonald's if I'm heading northwest for a job- It doesn't bother me if nincompoops tie up traffic in the center, What does bother me is the deteriorating streets in my neighborhood. Who is responsible for mowing the grass in the potholes anyway?

As Always,

The Reverend T.D. Smith

Immigration and real estate agent, that sounds like a pefect storm for Mr. Saab to further infest our neighborhoods with illegal aliens. Saab and his million dollar real estate transactions will destroy whatever is left of our community!

Lee Ann Sears is the only candidate who's been devoted to our community for the past 30 yrs and will stand up to all evil and greed.

thundertrak may have been dead-right on the McDonald's drive-thru issue (see letters to the editor), but he/she is dead-wrong here.

gsanabria is correct. The only clarification I would make is that Atherton-Newport is completely out of this deal. Whittier Pres is sitting on their property and will probably wait until the next cycle before choosing a worthy developer for the site.

Regards,

Kirk Cartozian

Wow. I guess Mr. Thundertrak took that play out of his classless Political Playbook."Toss out false accusations and see whatever sticks, doesn't matter if all of it was a complete lie. The damage of the accusation does enough damage." Fact #1 Mr. Saab works in an office owned by a wonderful real estate family, The Wendt Family(Vicki)APN#6251-037-004, who has been in business in Downey for over 40 years. Fact #2 Gallatin Medical Center was bought through a JV with Atherton-Newport Investments and Whittier Presb(original owner) back in 2007(APN#6251-035-037. They are not under any representation and were previously represented by a OC commercial broker. Please let's not make this like talk radio. Please don't throw dirt around and hope it spreads and might evolve into something that is believed to be true. If you have a statement please supply actual data like I did with the tax data. Let's have some class and dignity. By the way I am a Broker in Downey (Red Carpet Heritage)with no ties to any developer or city politician. What I do do is speak the truth.

“I will use my experience to encourage business in Downey”, WOW!!! This coming from the realtor broker who’s office mysteriously ended up in the downtown specific and now stands to make MILLIONS. Since when is Paramount Blvd part of Downtown Downey???

Guess who’s the broker for the Gallatin Medical Plaza, which happens to be next to Alex Saab’s office? Stay tuned for The Alex Saab broker machine coming to a home near you. He just might want to broker visas for all the illegal immigrants. This guy has crook written all over him!
