DOWNEY – Memorial Day is a holiday to remember those who died in active military service. On Monday, a Memorial Day commemoration was held at City Hall in order to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The beautiful ceremony had every seat filled by veterans and citizens. Boy Scout troop 242 was invited to the event and seemed thrilled about it.

Sean Ashton, a council member, made an incredible speech at this event. In his speech, he said “We are still able to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.”

Mr. Thompson, a World War II veteran, truly enjoyed this event. He was drafted and served in the U.S. Army during his military career. His favorite part of the Memorial Day commemoration was the patriotic treasurement and the respect that was showed to honor those who served our country. Mr. Thompson is inspiring and was a joy to meet.

Another veteran, Luis Ramon Gard, served in the U.S. Navy. His best experience while serving was the opportunity to travel the world. Gard enjoyed this event as it honored the veterans as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Gard is another truly inspiring veteran who joined since he wanted to serve his country.

Mr. Thompson and Mr. Gard are only two amongst many U.S. military veterans that have great spirits and caring souls.

Many people had different reasons for attending this event, for Nohemi Cabrera, her reason was that her brother had served in the military. Cabrera mentioned that the wreath presentation was her favorite part of this whole event.

Our community came together to celebrate Memorial Day and by the expressions of those in attendance, it was another successful event!
