Fire destroys north Downey home

DOWNEY – A fire caused major damage to a single-family home in north Downey on Wednesday afternoon.

No one inside the home was injured, but one civilian suffered minor smoke inhalation and was transported to a local hospital, officials said.

The two-alarm fire at 8528 Tweedy Lane was reported at 1:26 p.m., said Fire Chief Mark Gillaspie. Firefighters responded within five minutes and discovered heavy smoke and flames from the rear of the home.

“Crews quickly confirmed all occupants were out of the home and performed an aggressive offensive interior fire attack, protecting the unburned portion of the house,” Gillaspie said.

Firefighters from Santa Fe Springs and L.A. County also responded to the fire, protecting neighboring homes.

No cause was immediately given for the fire. The home sustained “major” fire damage and is uninhabitable.
