Sports Briefs: At Warren High, girls soccer camp draws 70 athletes

DOWNEY – The Warren High School girls’ soccer program is conducting summer workouts at Justice Stadium. 

The Lady Bear soccer program currently has 70 girls participating in summer workouts and 30 are incoming freshmen. The camp is focusing on fitness in preparation for the upcoming winter season.

The camp is also featuring skills and speed training. personal goalie training for the keepers, weight training, small sided games and scrimmages. As the camp has progressed, Coach Dussan is impressed with her incoming recruits’ continued progress and is pleased to see how hard the girls are working. 

Warren has won the last two San Gabriel Valley League championships and are looking to make it three in a row. Seniors Viviana Garcia, Yesenia Gutierrez and Alessandra Ramirez are some key returners who will lead the Lady Bears in 2016-17. Dussan added that she is pleased with how solid her defense looks as well.

Coach Dussan, her staff and players are all looking forward to the upcoming soccer season. Last year’s team finished their season with an overall record of 21-3-3 and were 10-0 in S.G.V.L. play. The Lady Bears were defeated by El Dorado 1-0 in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs.

The Downey High School girls’ soccer program has already had a busy summer.

 An information meeting was held June 10 at 2:30 p.m. Incoming player training took place June 13-16 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and June 20-23 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Returning players training took place June 13-16 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and June 20-23 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

The Lady Vikings participated in a competitive 7 v.7 tournament from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. last Saturday. Summer League games started on Monday and will run through next Thursday, July 7. 

Summer League games ran Monday through Thursday of this week from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will run Tuesday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. of next week. There will be no summer league games on Monday due to the observance of the 4th of July holiday.

Evaluations for group one will be held July 5-7 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and evaluations for group two will be held July 25-29 from 9:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m. Tryouts will be held August 23-26 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will conclude August 30-September 2 from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

The Downey High School boys’ tennis team began their summer tennis practices on June 21. 
The summer program will run through July 16. Practices will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Any questions can be directed to head coach Byung Park at bpark@dusd.net.

The Downey High School girls’ tennis team will begin their summer practices on Monday, August 1. Practices will run through August 12 and will be held Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Any questions can be directed to head coach Denise Diego at ddiego@dusd.net.

The Downey High School girls’ golf team will start their summer golf practices on July 26 and practices will run through August 11. 

Practices will be held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for the duration of the two weeks. The cost is $50.00 and will include balls and lessons at the Rio Hondo Golf Course located at 10627 Old River School Rd. 

Qualifying rounds to compete for the school during the fall golf season will take place on August 16, 18, 23 and 25. Any questions can be directed to head coach Jason Bean at jbean@dusd.net. Coach Bean and his staff hope to see you at the Rio Hondo Golf Course in late July.

The Warren High School girls’ basketball team will be hosting a fireworks fundraiser at the Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant located at 7447 Firestone Blvd. July 1-4. 

The hours for fundraising are July 1 from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., July 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., July 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and July 4 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Head coach Rachel Palmer would like to encourage those who are going to buy fireworks to purchase them from the fireworks stand located in front of Bob’s Big Boy and stop in for a bite to eat as well.

Proceeds from the fireworks stand will help the Warren High School girls’ basketball program. Only safe and sane fireworks will be sold. The Warren High School boys’ basketball team is currently running their summer practices from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday. 

New head coach Zaiid Leflore is pleased with the progress he has seen in his young team. The Bears are being led by seniors Terrell Johnson and John Nicholas and sophomore Tremond Johnson.

The Bears have been competing in two summer leagues. Warren has been playing Mondays and Wednesdays at Marina High School in Huntington Beach and on Tuesdays at Serra High School in Gardena.

Coach Leflore sees the S.G.V.L. as extremely competitive and believes his team will be competing for a playoff spot as long as they continue to work and play hard. The Bears will observe their C.I.F. mandated “dead period” the last week in July and the first part of August. Fall classes begin August 17.
