Students put skills to work at health clinic

LOS ANGELES - Students and faculty from Downey Adult School's medical programs participated in the free health clinic held earlier this month at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.Accompanied by instructors Benson Dimaranan, Dan Legaspi, Olga Saucedo and Ameerah Mahdi, students from the Dental Assisting and Pharmacy Technician programs volunteered in the various healthcare divisions of the free health clinic and assisted patients from morning to night. Dental assistant student Andreya Martinez utilized her training in chair-side assisting for coronal polishing, tooth extraction, filling, dental cleaning and oral hygiene. On the pharmacy side, Legaspi led his students in providing medication needs. Students showed flexibility and initiative in taking on tasks not normally in their range of duties, Legaspi said, including medication compounding. Students from Downey Adult School's vocational nursing program assisted with general medicine, women's health, dental treatment and in the pharmacy. "With many patients receiving the care they lined up for, the Downey Adult School healthcare programs definitely provided superb services," the school said in a statement.
