Mental health course in Whittier

WHITTIER - Whittier-based National Alliance on Mental Illness is sponsoring a 12-week series on mental illness that begins Oct. 2.The class will meet Tuesdays from 7-9:30 p.m. in the Uptown Whittier area. The course will cover information about schizophrenia, bipolar illness (manic depression), major depression as well as panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. Classes will also review coping skills, basic information about brain biology and medications, listening and communication techniques, problem-solving skills, recovery and rehabilitation, fighting stigma, advocacy and more. The curriculum was written by an experienced mental health professional and is taught by NAMI volunteers who have been trained as course instructors. The course is specifically designed for parents, siblings, spouses, teenage and adult children with severe and persistent psychiatric disabilities.
