LB Symphony targets younger audience

LONG BEACH - The Long Beach Symphony Orchestra is "bringing back the classics" with a performance Jan. 12 featuring guest violinist Elmar Oliveira. The performance marks this year's debut of the Balcony Club, inspired to attract a younger generation to symphony concerts. The Balcony Club features a bar, drink specials, and a casual, friendly environment suitable for networking and socializing. "Going to a Classics concert doesn't have to be a formal or expensive affair," said Rick Berry, director of marketing for the Long Beach Symphony. "The Balcony Club is a great way for people to check out our orchestra without some of the barriers that people may have perceived in the past. The price is right and the atmosphere is casual and friendly. Plus, the music actually sounds best from the balcony." On Saturday, music director Enrique Arturo Diemecke will conduct Rossini's Barber of Seville: Overture, Saint-Saens's Violin Concerto No. 3 featuring Elmar Oliveira, and Debussy's Nocturenes and La Mer. Tickets to the Balcony Club are $20 (or two tickets for $35) and can be purchased at the box office or by calling (562) 436-3203, ext. 1.
