Liberals on the defensive

Dear Editor:Ahh, another year of divisive politics. Life does go on! I suppose the only silver lining of another Obama term is that liberals must remain on the defensive, which Mr. Clarke attempts to do valiantly. However, it's a rather difficult record to defend, and now that Obama has been reelected, it's time for him and the Democrats to take responsibility for their policies rather than continuing to push blame on others. But since Mr. Clarke felt it necessary to comment on gun control and Ms. Van Leuven's letter, I feel it necessary to correct his "facts." While true that Obama inherited a massive debt, he unfortunately only increased it by a higher percentage than any president in history. Spouting the cliché of "lie of weapons of mass destruction" is so yesterday. I guess we have a difference of opinion on the definition of "lie" when every major intelligence bureau believed this "lie" at the time and said so to Bush - and by the way, aren't we seeing some of those non-existent WMDs being used in Syria right now? But oh well. You can't argue with a liberal over word definitions when they can just change them. Obama, if I'm not mistaken, stuck to the timeline for ending the wars that Bush laid out, and kudos to him for being responsible in the foreign policy arena. No, Obama shouldn't fly commercial, yet it is unseemly for the public to spend more on the Obama holiday trips than the Brits spend on the royal family, don't you think? Didn't we fight a war to get rid of the notion of a privileged royalty? Obama did not "save" General Motors or the American car industry. Make no mistake about it. He saved the car unions and if he had any control over the matter, Michigan would not have become a right-to-work state. Democrats never bite the hands that feed them. Whatever our many disagreements, such as Bush being "one of the worst presidents in history," Mr. Clarke and all those who enjoy a good civil debate are welcome to join our Downey Salon meetings every third Sunday of the month. Refreshments are always provided, and a good time is had by all. I imagine gun control will be our next topic! Alaina Niemann Downey
