Little league installing scoreboards

DOWNEY - Northwest Downey Little League will install two electronic scoreboards at Furman Park in time for opening day on Feb. 23.According to the terms of a memorandum of understanding approved by the City Council on Tuesday, NWDLL will pay for the LED-lighted scoreboards and installation. The scoreboards become property of the city but NWDLL is responsible for their maintenance and liability insurance. Plans call for the scoreboards, which each measure 4 ft. by 8 ft., to be installed in right-center field on the north field, and in left-center on the south field, four feet behind the home run fences. They would be powered using electricity from the snack shack and operated with wireless remotes. No advertising is allowed on the scoreboards and the only acceptable logo is that of NWDLL. Other sports leagues can use the scoreboards but must reimburse the city for electricity costs, according to the MOU. The MOU doesn't include a construction start date, but NWDLL is paying the city a refundable deposit worth 50 percent of the construction costs in the unlikely event that city crews need to complete the work themselves. NWDLL has operated at Furman Park since 1957. The organization's predecessor, North Downey Little League, donated a baseball diamond and bleachers to Furman Park's original development in 1956, said parks and recreation director Arlene Salazar.
