ABWA celebrates its 50th anniversary

DOWNEY – The Eldorado Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association celebrated its 50th anniversary of “helping women one woman at a time” on April 15 at the Rio Hondo Event Center. The keynote speaker for the evening was John Garcia, Superintendent of Downey Unified Schools. Since a part of the mission statement for ABWA emphasizes education, Mr. Garcia spoke about the direction the state of California and the Downey Unified Schools are pursuing in educating our youth.

Two local business people were honored for their work in the community. The first was Jim Wilkinson, Business Analytics and Data Warehousing Manager and Volunteer Director of the Downey FoodHelp food bank. Also honored was Jennifer DeKay, owner and publisher of the Downey Patriot.

Eldorado also announced their 2015-16 Chapter Woman of the Year, Carol Veatch. Carol has been a member for 14 years and has served on the board as President, Vice-President and Secretary. She served on several committees and is currently Chair of the ABWA Southern California Council.

The Eldorado Chapter normally meets at the Rio Hondo Event Center the third Wednesday of the month. Networking begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner, speaker and a brief business meeting.
