Boosters paid for Hawaii trip, DUSD says

DOWNEY — The Downey High Football team’s recent trip to Hawaii for a scrimmage game against Kapolei High School was entirely booster-paid, said an official at Downey Unified School District.

According to Public Relations Coordinator Ashley Greaney, the program’s boosters had two years to raise $130,000, which covered expenses for the team, coaching staff, and all other team personnel.

Anyone else who wished to attend were required to pay their own way.

According to Greaney, Superintendent Dr. John Garcia and Board member Donald La Plante attended the game, with Garcia paying for himself and La Plante in the area for a separate event.

The scrimmage was part of an agreement with Kapolei, which saw their team travel to Downey last year.

Along with the game, the trip included educational excursions, including a visit to the Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona memorials.
