Bosco announces new lacrosse coach

BELLFLOWER – Christopher Jewett has been named head lacrosse coach at St. John Bosco High School, effective July 1.

Jewett, 39, was most recetly head lacrosse coach at Los Alamitos High School, where he led the Griffins to the 2014 Sunset League Championship and was named the 2014 Sunset League Coach of the Year.

“We are very fortunate to be gaining a renowned lacrosse coach who not only has a wealth of experience and enthusiasm but who also is a teacher of integrity, whose teams win or lose with a high degree of sportsmanship and mutual respect for their opponents," said Monty McDermott, Bosco's director of athletics. "He is the right choice for Bosco as we look toward the future of our program.

"I welcome Chris and his family to our community and I am looking forward to his beginning to work with our young men.”

A native of Rhode Island, Jewett was an All-State lacrosse player and All-Prep All-State quarterback on the football team at Providence Country Day High School in East Providence, Rhode Island before attending Providence College, where he played NCAA Division I lacrosse.

He began his coaching career at Brentwood School in Brentwood before landing his first high school position in 2008 as the offensive coordinator at Peninsula High School in Palos Verdes, where he helped lead the school to the 2008 L.A. County CIF Final Four.

In 2010, he was hired as the head lacrosse coach at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. He took the team to the CIF playoffs for two consecutive years, and in 2011 he won the Bay League and L.A. County CIF Championships. He was also named the Bay League Coach of the Year.

He joined the staff at Los Alamitos High School in 2013, and led the Griffins to the CIF playoffs for three consecutive years.

He founded and continues to serve as president of Leverage Lacrosse, which provides club teams throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. Jewett was also founder of the Los Angeles Box Lacrosse League, now in its sixth season, where more than 450 boys play on 26 teams from Santa Monica, West L.A., Pasadena, South Bay, Palos Verdes, Long Beach, Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach.

“I am thrilled to become a part of St. John Bosco High School, and to leading the Bosco Braves’ lacrosse program," said Jewett. "I look forward to the challenge of being a part of Bosco, a legendary college-preparatory school that has turned out so many outstanding students and accomplished athletes. I am excited to get started.”
