Bosco beats Servite for league title

CERRITOS – On a stormy Halloween night Bosco running backs Clifford Simms & Sean McGrew provided the “thunder & lightening” as the backfield duo helped Bosco to a win over Servite and a League Title. By knocking off Servite 49 – 26 the Braves (8-1, 4-0) captured their third straight Trinity League Championship.

As the game began and the rain started to fall Servite turned to their offensive running game to move the ball up and down the field.

Servite’s University of Oregon-bound quarterback, Travis Waller, bolted to a 65-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 Servite lead early in the first quarter.

Bosco was able to cut into the lead 7-3, after kicker Eric Daniels connected on a 26-yard field goal to close out the first quarter scoring.

As the rain subsided Bosco’s passing game opened up and QB Josh Rosen was able to find Anselem Umeh on a 30-yard TD pass pushing the Braves in front 10–7.

On their next possession Rosen hooked up with senior wide receiver Joey Chenoweth on a 35-yard scoring pass that stretched the lead to 17-7.

Servite responded with a Waller to Joe Ferraro 2-yard touchdown pass right before halftime to cut the Bosco lead to three points, 17-14.

The second half saw more rain fall and the start of the Simms and McGrew thunder and lightening show.

Simms started the third quarter scoring when he broke tackles and pounded his way to a 25-yard TD run.

Down ten points, Waller and teammate Tate Beachley put together a “run-heavy” drive that Waller capped off with a 2-yard run into the end zone. Servite missed the PAT to trail 24-20 late in the third quarter.

Their lead down to four points, Bosco looked to running back McGrew for some lightening. The junior delivered not once, but twice.  The first strike came when McGrew took a hand off and went 70-yards to the house and extend the Braves advantage to 30-20. PAT missed.

After Bosco’s defense stopped Servite on downs McGrew struck again. Rosen hit McGrew coming out of the backfield on a short pass that McGrew turned into a 39-yard touchdown and a 36-20 Bosco lead.

With a fourth quarter lead Bosco handed the game over to Simms.  The senior running back responded and closed out his thunderous night with 126 yards on 17 carries and lead Bosco to the 49-26 victory.

Bosco wraps up their regular season with a 7pm home game tonight vs. Rancho Santa Margarita.
