City extends deal with towing firms

DOWNEY - Three local towing companies have had their contracts extended by the city. The one-year contract extensions are with United Towing, Doug's Tug and Titan Transportation. Under terms of the deal, the towing companies will remit 20 percent of gross fees received on all city and Downey Police Department-generated tows and services, in addition to 30-day impounds. The city has collected approximately $6,600 in fees from 30-day impounds over the last two years, data shows. Speaking at Tuesday night's City Council meeting, council members Luis Marquez and Mario Guerra said they would like future towing contracts to be put out for bid. Guerra said three towing companies are excessive, and Marquez said Downey could potentially make more money by accepting bids.
