Columbus High School's Bianca Farina named Teacher of the Year

DOWNEY – Downey Unified School District has named Bianca Farina, an English teacher at Columbus High School and longtime Warren High educator, as its 2025 Teacher of the Year. Farina was also recognized as a Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year semi-finalist at the 44th Annual Teachers of the Year Luncheon, hosted by the Los Angeles County Office of Education at the Universal City Hilton on Sept. 19.

A Downey Unified alumna, Farina has spent more than a decade shaping students’ academic and personal growth within her hometown district. She taught English at Warren High School for 13 years before joining Columbus High, where she is celebrated for her student-centered teaching, mentorship of new educators, and community involvement.

“Yesterday, I officially submitted my Teacher of the Year application to the county,” Farina said earlier this year. “It’s an incredible honor to represent our district—one that raised me, shaped me, and continues to inspire me every day. I’m deeply thankful for everyone who supported me throughout this process… No matter the outcome, this experience reminded me why I do what I do.”

Superintendent Dr. Roger Brossmer praised Farina as an example of Downey Unified’s mission in action.

“Mrs. Farina embodies the very best of Downey Unified,” he said. “She is a product of our schools, a trusted colleague, and a teacher who ignites purpose and promise in her students every day.

“We’re proud to celebrate her as our Teacher of the Year and thrilled to see her recognized at the county level.”

In addition to her county recognition, Farina will be honored as a special guest at Downey Unified’s 11th annual State of the Schools breakfast on Oct. 10.

Downey Unified serves more than 22,000 students across 21 campuses, from elementary to adult education, and emphasizes college and career readiness, character development, and global competitiveness.
