Credit union awards $9K in school grants

DOWNEY – Downey Federal Credit Union (DFCU) awarded $9,000 in grants to 16 Downey educators last week as a part of its 2014 Student Enrichment Grant Program. DFCU has provided over $90,000 in grants to teachers over the past 12 years.

The awarded grants cover the cost of programs, supplies, and training to improve the classroom experience for students.

This year’s winning submissions included a dramatic play area for pre-school students, a social skills program for students with special needs, a girls’ empowerment club, leadership training for the Small Change Club at Warren High School, college readiness materials, and art supplies for elementary school students.

“We continue to be impressed with the creative and innovative grant submissions we receive each year,” said Ray Mesler, DFCU CEO. “It’s exciting to provide grants that will enhance the learning experience of Downey students. We know that it is the dedication and drive of these teachers that make the Downey Unified School District one of the best in the state.”

“Our partnership with Downey Unified School District has been a long-term relationship,” added Sheila Tetangco, director of marketing and communications for the credit union. “DFCU supports, and will continue to support, Downey educators. Our Student Enrichment Grants are just another way DFCU gives back to the community we serve.”
