Crime Report: 7/26/26
On July 24, 2026, the victim was having car issues and stopped to check on the vehicle in the area of 3rd Street and Myrtle. As the victim was crouched down, an unknown Black male pointed a handgun at him and demanded his vehicle. The victim believes there was another Black male involved (NFD). The vehicle, a 2013 Volvo SUV, was taken, along with some of the victim's personal items. Detectives are investigating.
On July 23, 2026, officers responded to the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and Cherokee Avenue regarding a male suspect starting a fire on the sidewalk. Officers arrived and detained the suspect, who was a 30-year-old male transient from the City of Los Angeles. According to several witnesses, the suspect compiled several piles of leaves and used a lighter to ignite the leaves on fire. The suspect was arrested for 451 PC. The Downey Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. There were no damages caused by the fire.
On July 20, 2026, officers took a vehicle burglary report from the 7100 block of Nada St. The mail carrier advised that while delivering mail on foot, his mail van was broken into and mail was taken. Detectives are investigating.
On July 19, 2026, officers responded to a loud noise complaint. When the victim contacted the suspect, the suspect became angry and threatened to shoot the victim. As he was making the threats, the victim observed the suspect point what he believed was a rifle at him and racked it. The victim was in fear for his life and called police. Officers made contact with the suspect via telephone and after a lengthy negotiation, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody.
On July 18, 2026, officers were dispatched to Dennis the Menace Park regarding a report of a subject in a vehicle inhaling from a balloon. Officers arrived on scene and located the suspect, a 38-year-old M/H Northern California resident, in the driver's seat of a box truck, inhaling in front of them. In the course of the investigation, officers could smell a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the truck. Officers ultimately located approximately 15 large trash bags, all containing marijuana. The total weight was approximately 300 pounds. The suspect was arrested. Detectives are investigating.
